Le manuscrit, produit probablement en Bourgogne, a appartenu à J. Vintemille (cf. ex-libris du XVIe siècle sur le f. Av, « C’est a moy, J. Vintemille R. »), et ensuite à Jacques-Auguste de Thou (cf. l’ex-libris au f. 1r, « Jac. Aug. Thuani » et la correspondance dans le catalogue du 1617, n° 174, « Iul. Caesaris commentarii de bello Gallico De bello Civili De bello Africano De bello Alexandrino » dans le ms. Dupuy 653, f. 11v). Il est passé ensuite dans la bibliothèque de Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683) et il entra dans la Bibliothèque du roi en 1732, avec le reste de la collection colbertine.
