  • Liber medicinalis. A compendium of the 'Canon' by an unnamed German [?]: including a list of vegetable and animal materia medica, receipts, etc.: with a 'Compendium de regimine sanitatis [Salernitano]'. Written in a semi-gothic hand in double column of 34-37 lines to a column. Initials in alternate blue and red, paragraph marks in red. Fol. 1. Medical receipts, etc. by several hands. 2 (Index). The contents of the first part (fol. 5v-fol. 70v) are: ff. 5v-32v General rules, etc. 32v-33 Food and drink. 34-41 Fevers. 41v-65 Treatment of diseases, poisons. 65-66v Syrups, electuaries, etc. A few of the receipts on fol. 101v, col. 2, are partly in cypher. On the upper of two vellum slips pasted inside the lower cover containing medical receipts, is the inscription 'Bogk G. Koneken'. Chevallier, Répertoire: Biobibliographie has an entry for a Gerard Koneke who is described as 'Prévôt de Bernau 1407, docteur à Bologne 1414, doyen de Magdeburg 1447-60'. Inside the upper cover, on a pasted-in vellum slip are receipts in German and Latin, and the date 1435.
  • This MS. has been identified from the two entries in Thorndike's 'Supplement to the Catalogue of Incipits' which appeared in Speculum, Vol. 26, 1951: pp. 673 and 695.
  • In the Wellcome Library:The contents of this MS. as far as fol. 101v agree almost verbatim with that of MS. 106 [AVICENNA], except that in the latter the 'Medicina simplex' follows after the section on general rules, and is itself followed by the section on food and drink, and the 'Compendium de regimine sanitatis' is not included.
  • On the first leaf is the signature of 'C. W. V. Nostiz' who is Christoph Wenzeslaus Graf von Nostiz [1643-1712], and his large armorial book-plate lettered 'C.W.G.V.N.' is pasted inside the upper cover.
